The things we learn from our children...

I thought that as the parent I would be the one to provide teaching and guidance. I have since learned that I am often the student.

This last Thanksgiving, Mike's father learned an old schoolmate had nowhere to go for Thanksgiving. Being the generous man that he is, he invited him to join our family for the holiday. It was a tasty, enjoyable and LOUD feast followed by some down time before pie. I had noticed that the "friend" didn't join us for dessert and figured he just needed some quiet away from our rambunctiousness. Come to find out, Tracy had asked him to join us and he had politely declined. Tracy then asked if he would just like someone to talk to and spent some time keeping this man company. I was too wrapped up with filling my belly with pumpkin pie to notice my sweet seven-year-old showing love to a man he met only an hour prior.

My father-in-law later told us about what had happened and I feel very touched. I am so proud of his unprompted act of kindness. As this time of year we turn our hearts toward gratitude, I am grateful for my children. I am thankful for the love they show to me, to each other and to others. If you know me well enough, you know crying is not in my lexicon. However, each time I read this post or think about Tracy sitting with this gentleman, I get a little choked up.

Thanksgiving Feast

Due to Thanksgiving Hockey Tournaments, we were usually somewhere in Colorado for Thanksgiving and, thus, usually celebrated in a hotel restaurant or Denny's. It wasn't until I married Mike and we began hosting that I fell in love with the holiday. Don't get me wrong, Halloween will ALWAYS have my heart!

Melody scouring the ads in the paper before we head out.
I think I love Thanksgiving most when I am hosting. My normal obsession with a clean kitchen goes out the window for 24 hours while we prepare a fabulous feast. I adore setting the table where friends and family will gather. We are always open to new guests and most often end up with an eclectic group of people.

Once again this year some of Melody's co-workers from India joined us. It is always fascinating to hear them discuss their culture and the diversity that exists between regions. I had always thought there were only a couple of different religions etc. throughout the Nation, but it turns out there are SEVERAL!!!
Ian is a great sport!!!
We were also able to have Ian, Melody's brother, for dinner because he is living in Utah and attending BYU. He brought his roommate, Matthew, and Matthew's sister, Megan. The kids were THRILLED to have so many people to climb on, perform to, and play with.
We didn't take many pics for some reason. The table looked really pretty....maybe I will capture it next time.
Later that night we had to go to the annual BLACK FRIDAY craziness!!! This year's crew included myself, Charity, Melody and Megan. We hit Fashion Place Mall, Toy's R Us, Target........we were pooped but came home with some STEALS!!! I can't wait to do it all over again!

An Ode to Thanksgiving

Staying up late to make homemade pies
that surely will add inches to our thighs.
The tables were set, the food was cooked
How delicious Mike's turkey looked!

The feast was on, it was time to say grace

Everett got food all over his face.

Summer enjoyed her first taste of food
It put her in a more Thanksgiving mood.

As the food settled we got in the groove

Playing Rock Band and showing our moves.

A time to be grateful for blessings galore

And stuffing our bellies till they can't stretch anymore.

Later that evening, at precisely midnight
Mel and I shopped with all of our might!

The older I get the more I appreciate Thanksgiving. Growing up we were always in Colorado for hockey tournaments and usually had Thanksgiving dinner at Denny's or the hotel. I LOVE cooking an elaborate meal, decorating the table and gathering with friends and family.
This year we had my brother Mike, his wife Melody, her sister Naomi, Naomi's husband Jeff and 3 gentlemen visiting from India to Mel's office: Mehool, Ranjeeth, and Fishwa. They were good sports to try all of the food and were fascinated by the concept of jello. Mike was excited at the thought of having "indians" for Thanksgiving dinner.
I am blessed to have amazing people in my life. I never feel I am alone or unsupported because of all of you. Thank you for being a part of my life and I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving feast.
